These are the 4 pillars and core values that West Virginia Public Theatre seeks to achieve with every artistic venture we pursue. Each year we mount professional productions for children and families that serve as an educational and enriching experience for young theatergoers. Entertaining as our productions are, they’re matched with a range of educational resources.
Each holiday season WVPT invites students from surrounding counties in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland to attend our school matinees. For these performances we offer students discounted tickets, and we provide instructors a show-specific study guide to promote literacy through drama and live performance.
For 20 years, WVPT’s holiday shows have reached over 3,000 children annually from 16 counties in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. For many of these children, WVPT provides their first exposure to live professional theatre.
For all school matinees, student and parent tickets are $9. School faculty and staff tickets are free of charge.
If you would like to know more about attending our school matinees, please email group@wvpublictheatre.org.

As part of our mission to inspire and educate, we offer a holiday show study guide to all educators who bring a group to our school matinee performances.
We distribute these guides a month before the opening matinee performance so that instructors may integrate the guide into their lesson plans prior to bringing their group to see the show.
In each guide you will find a play synopsis, a list of the play’s characters, some biographical information on the playwright, and a brief guide to theatre etiquette. We also include vocabulary lists, pre- and post-show questions for the students to consider, and fun activities for students of all ages.
